I've also played a bit of Cimmeria, interesting spot, great archers – they don't get pikes though. Regular pikemen work just fine in campaign all the way through, you've got a lot of hoplites for your flanks, and you can cover your relative weaknesses with mercs - top ranged units right in your home province, Rhodian slingers close by, and if you go a bit east you find Cappadocian cavalry, go west & there's Campanian horsemen. It's murder on rear charges and trashes any regular cav you're going to face in the early game.Īthens isn't so bad. I don't know of any other faction that starts with an elite unit (besides their generals.) Against early units, that thing is great. Hidden selling point: you get a unit of companion cav to play around with from the very start. Haven't tried Seleucids - they've got a great roster and a nutso diplomatic situation so probably fun :DĮgypt's got a nice position (I think they're one of the biggest factions at start, and helpfully, it's a whole province) and a great big roster to play around with.īaktria's a lot of fun too - Hellenic infantry + good skirmishers + horse archers + cataphracts + elephants! And you just get to stomp your way from east to west. But they get there and also benefit from cheap agent use. Pontus doesn't feel much like a Hellenic faction at first - you'll be using a lot of Eastern spearmen & hillmen. After that the campaign became a slog fest as the East declared war on the West. All the Hellenic factions I've tried are pretty good. The Brutii have an excellent starting position and early expansion into the Greek Cities, giving them most of the wealthiest territories in the game from very early on. Unfortunately Rome didn't see this coming at all and was wiped out really fast. Which faction is best Best factions are either the Brutii or the Seculid Empire. The struggle for Iberia and Sicily is difficult and intense, but once it is pacified you have a base of operations to build up for a Hannibal trip. The first forty turns were quite engaging. I personally liked the Carthaginian campaign to a certain point. Confederations with other Greeks and the campaign creates an epic Greek empire. After that Antigonids and Illyria are quick grabs. Some Greek cities can be rough, but Sparta and Athens have it easy because they can support each other and can only be attacked from one front. I haven't tried other Diadochi much, but their starting positions are a lot more secure so definitely recommended. I had negative income, less than two thousand troops and fresh Rhodian and Knossian armies were landing on my shores. Needless to say, I surrendered that campaign. My army was not ever fully replenished after turn three. I wiped out, two Tylis armies, two Spartan armies, three Athenian armies, and one Rhodian army. Eprius is wiped out within in ten turns leaving you very exposed. As soon as I "discovered" Rhodos and Knossos they declared war for no reason. My last campaign had me at war with Tylis, Sparta, Athens, Rhodos, and Knossos. Diadochi are a bit easier though, coz as the Greek factions, you'll need to really plan or get booted by others.Well the bigger Diadochi are a bit easier, Antigonidai have it rough. If not Romans, then the Greek or Diadochi. If you want to torture yourself, play on of them on hard or above ^^ Aldo they are blue, and blue is best dreexeldragoon 3 yr. They also have 2 extra ships which are the most powerful in the game, the other two dont have access to. No trades mean less money and no diplomacy running. Scipii are the best roman faction due to their ability to upgrade units to tier 3 weapons and armor, something the others cant do. Also giving them 5000 doenst seem to change their mind, which increases the difficulty even more. Also both have another problem in common, literally no one wants to trade with you. This is especially the case of the Odrysian. I have wars with folks who are not even close to me lol. Also the diplomatic status of players seem have to changed, if you are minor faction and have negativ with anyone it basically almost means an war. The recruitment system for cultures makes it extremly difficult to get units for Tylis, unless you want to spend 120 for each unit, each turn. Tylis and Odrysian got one of the hardest starting points for me. However, Tylis, Getae and Odrysian are really hard. Made some wars with my blood buddys and i got a conforderation after 2 turns which both of them. Currently i try to get run with the pirates and raiders.
