The drivers of vaccine hesitancy are complex and subject to temporal, contextual, and vaccine-specific influences. A reduction in vaccine hesitancy is necessary to bridge the coverage gaps and decrease the recurring incidence of VPDs in North Carolina. ![]() From 2013 to 2018, there were annual reports of seven VPDs in North Carolina, with significant increases in the cases of two VPDs: hepatitis A and hepatitis B. The primary consequence of vaccine hesitancy is under-vaccination-a situation where individuals are not fully protected against VPDs. In addition, many pregnant women decline vaccines that are offered to them, suggesting concerns with vaccine safety and efficacy, rather than convenience or complacency. Although vaccine coverage rates among pregnant women are not readily available for North Carolina, data suggest that only 1 in 2 pregnant women in the southern United States gets the TDaP and flu vaccine. ![]() In parallel, seasonal influenza vaccination rates among individuals aged 6 months and older remain low in North Carolina, with only 1 in 2 people getting the vaccine every year ( Table 1). As the table shows, HPV vaccine coverage is also lower compared to other school-mandated adolescent vaccines in North Carolina (such as the TDaP or MenACWY vaccines), suggesting lower prioritization of non-mandatory vaccines and missed opportunities for prevention of HPV-related cancers. Among adolescents in North Carolina, uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine remains lower than the HealthyPeople 2020 coverage goal of 80% ( Table 1). As a result, childhood vaccine coverage in North Carolina is lower at age 2 compared to kindergarten, where vaccines are required for school entry ( Table 1). Many parents in North Carolina choose to delay or space out vaccines for their young children as opposed to following recommended schedules. According to data from the National Immunization Survey, approximately 20% of parents in North Carolina are vaccine hesitant. Hesitancy is a contributor to vaccine coverage gaps in North Carolina. In this commentary, we discuss challenges in addressing vaccine hesitancy in North Carolina and present recommendations for mitigation strategies. Despite this global acknowledgement, vaccine hesitancy remains the elephant in the room – an uncomfortable and often controversial topic when it comes to the policies, programs, and practices to encourage vaccination. The World Health Organization acknowledges vaccine hesitancy as a universal and significant threat to global health. VPDs result in the diversion of public health resources, increased economic burden, and negative societal ramifications from unnecessary morbidity and mortality. ![]() Vaccine-hesitant individuals tend to cluster geographically, hence, communities where they live are at a greater risk for VPDs. In practice, vaccine hesitancy manifests as delays in receipt of or refusal to accept vaccines, resulting in under-vaccination of individuals. Reduced convenience of or incidental costs associated with accessing vaccinations, and complacency toward vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) also contribute to vaccine hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy arises from concerns about the safety and efficacy of vaccines and from low trust in individuals or organizations promoting vaccines. Individuals’ reluctance to accept vaccines is termed vaccine hesitancy.

![]() (if a stronger infill is desired, it is important not to overdo it and enter an appropriate value in the nozzle, as in this case, the nozzle is 0.4 mm, at most only three layers can be combined. This setting prevents the printer from printing the infill for each layer, but only printing it in one go at the specific number of layers set. These parameters can be useful to create an object where the normal center of gravity needs to be shifted.Ĭombine Infill Layer: This parameter is very useful, as ideaMaker gives users the option of printing the substrate with a greater layer height than the layer height set for the print in the “Layer” tab.įor example, if the print is being carried out at a layer height of 0.1 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle, by entering a value of “3”, the printer will make two layers without infill, and the last layer will print the infill in one go at 0.3 mm thick. This parameter allows users to set a value in mm on the respective X and Y axes, where not to print the infill. If users set the “Infill flowrate”, do not change this parameter and vice versa. Here, ideaMaker allows a custom extrusion width to be set, and automatically adjusts the print flow to obtain it. The flowrate corresponds to the width of the extrusion, so a flowrate percentage corresponds to a specific width. This parameter is like the “Infill Flowrate” parameter, as was previously explained. If faster printing is desired, “ Grid” should be chosen, though the object will still have good strength. Should the purpose be a very strong object, choose the “ Cubic” infill. Users can choose from a wide variety of shapes. ![]() This parameter changes the “ Texture” of the infill. In this case, it is advisable to increase the ‘Shell’ number in the Layer settings to compensate for any bulges or over-extrusions caused by an increase in the print flow. Increasing this value can be useful if users want to increase the overall strength of the object to be printed but may result in some aesthetic defects on the outer surface of the model. Increasing this value will make the “Beads” forming the infill wider than normal, and therefore also stronger. This parameter modifies the extrusion “ Flow/Width” for the infill only. Normally, the value set as default in ideaMaker is sufficient to ensure good strength and no gaps between outer wall layers and the infill. This parameter is to determine how much fill overlaps the last internal print perimeter. The higher this value is, the denser the mesh will be, greatly increasing the strength of the printed object, but on the other hand, more time and material is needed to print it. It allows users to vary the percentage of how the object is required to be, by means of a infill “texture” (rectangular, cubic, grid, etc.). This is the parameter that is most often changed with each new print. Normally, the infill is printed with the same material as the rest of the print. On a 3D printer with two extruders, this parameter can be used to indicate which extruder users want to use to print the infill of your object with. Should the printer in question have a single extruder printer, this value is set to “ All Extruder“. ![]() This guide will focus on explaining the main infill print parameters in the ideaMaker Slicer. Knowing how to manage it correctly is therefore essential, but to do so, it’s necessary to know each parameter very well, what it does, and how and on what it acts. But not only the infill, the printing time and the aesthetic quality of our object also depends on it. Infill is a very important component, and the rigidity and robustness of our 3D print depends on it. Let’s analyse the parameters to understand how and where they act. My experience suggests that when mapping millions of dots over a few hundred polygons it’s better to define a larger ratio. In this tutorial, we use this type of dot-density mapping with one dot representing 1000 inhabitants. So we frequently use a dot to represent 100, 1000 or more individuals (one-to-many dot density map). But mapping population in such a way is resource-intensive because it requires allocating millions of data points. country, region, community) using randomly distributed dots.Ī dot can denote one individual and that’s a one-to-one dot density map. With dot-density maps we display the distribution of quantities within a polygon (i.e. Up to this point we used different shapes to display population size but we didn’t really show population density. If you’d like to make the other two types of cartograms, non-contiguous and Dorling cartogram have a look at my full code here. One thing to keep in mind is that this package doesn’t work with the coordinate reference systems based on degrees so you first need to transform your shapefile into another system. We only need to pass the weights ( pop_1000s feature) as well as the number of iterations for the cartogram algorythm. We use a convenient cartogram package that creates the distortion with a blink of an eye. In the following lines, we mainly focus on contiguous cartograms. There are several types of cartograms such as contiguous, non-contiguous, and graphical. This helps us minimize the tendency to attach more importance to territorially greater areas. ![]() ![]() Higher quantity goes hand in hand with enlarged polygons while smaller values correspond to shrinking geometries. ![]() A cartogram is the type of map that distorts the shape of polygon to depict the quantity of a feature. So far, we created maps with regular shapes but cartograms do the opposite. This is a good practice if you have multiple overlapping points. In the current setup, we also manually decrease the alpha value of our points to 0.5 to create transparent bubbles. To avoid this confusion, we opt for a single color value and allow the bubble size to vary. But be mindful that the colors might not correspond to the point sizes since we use a continuous scale and the two features can vary independently of each other. Next, we use the size as the main aesthetics feature and select a color value from our palette.Īnother option would be to define the color as the aesthetics feature and use the whole palette. Mapping = aes (x = long, y = lat, label = NAME_LATN ) ,įinally, we are ready to create the bubble map! We also use polygons in the background though some of you may want to remove this line. For simplicity’s sake, we transform it to thousands and define the limits and breaks. So, instead of population per square kilometer we use population count. This helps us reduce the bias caused by different area size in choropleth maps where big regions tend to steal our attention. Every circle is going to be centered on their respective region to show population size. In our case, we will use circles to represent regions. Similar to choropleth maps, bubbles visualize the size of geographic coordinates or larger geographic units. Keyheight = unit ( 1.15, units = "mm" ) ,Īnother common way to display population density is a bubble map.
